death and pearls

Pearls are apparently de rigeur for funerals now.
Maybe always they were, but I never noticed.
So why was I noticing what peeople were wearing at the funeral?
Oh, yeah, because they were large and showy, and if we weren't in a church you'd a thought all these ladies were on the way to the opera.
